The Falmouth 24hr Comic

10.30 am Tuesday 24th of November - 10.30am Wednesday 25th of November

The Poly, Falmouth

On the 24th of November a group of artists, illustrators and photographers will be challenging their creativity and stamina. With no preparation and very little sleep, they will have just 24 hours to complete 24 pages of illustrated narrative inspired by a local story

The event is open to the public to see the artists working and view the pages as they are completed. There is even opportunity to challenge yourself to create a timed comic.

The Falmouth 24hr Comic is funded by FEAST, a new programme to make great art happen in Cornish villages and towns. Their main focus is to bring communites together to take part in creative activities.

The results will be displayed at The Poly until Saturday the 28th on November.

There will be a follow up exhibition at The Soup Galley, Truro in December.

The Aftermath

I thought I'd just post some of my thoughts after the fact.

All the work has been stripped from inside The Poly. All that remains is a smell of budget energy drinks and painful ink. I apologise sincerely to the artists who had to endure my slow descent into madness, but I see this as a light-hearted lifeline of relief. Much like Richard O'Brien in The Crystal Maze. It was humbling to see the artists still staring at paper after all those hours and they did us proud. Professional, committed and dedicated to the singular event. As if scribbling to save us all.

I would like to thank them all. Also The Poly, Feast, Martin Coote, Source FM, Cally Gibson, Sara Bowler and, of course, Philippa Rushworth.

All thats left to do is close the books and sort the legacy of this fine event. Keep checking this blog for more updates, as we have some ideas to repeat, but more presently, to collate the work in a publication. So three cheers for this particular brassy strut!

Regards,
Thomas Sharpe

Comic created in a day
Thursday, November 19, 2009, 14:56

A GROUP of illustrators have challenged themselves
to create a comic in just 24 hours at an event in Falmouth next week.
The Falmouth 24hr Comic takes place at The Poly on Tuesday
and will see each illustrator make a 24-page comic.
Throughout the day visitors will be able to see the artists
working, view the results and have a go at creating their own timed comic.

The 24hr Comic idea was the brainchild of American cartoonist,
Scott McCloud in 1990 and the challenge has since been taken up
by thousands of professional and amateur artists worldwide.
Organised by three recent University College Falmouth
graduates, Tom Sharpe, Phil Rushworth and Cally Gibson, the
event will be the first major incarnation of this project in Cornwall.

The artists are not allowed to prepare any work before
the event ensuring the comic is inspired entirely by the
story they will be given on the day about Falmouth.

Visitors will be able to challenge themselves to produce their
own timed comic from 10am until 10.30pm on Tuesday - space
and material provided. All of the results will be displayed at
The Poly and could even make it onto The Falmouth 24hr Comic blog.

The Falmouth 24hr Comic challenge begins at 10.30am in
the Daniell Room at The Poly, Falmouth, and open to the public
until 10.30pm on Tuesday.

The exhibition of final work is open until Saturday from
10am to 5pm, with a follow up exhibition at The Soup Gallery, Truro, in December.

Hurrah!

Richard Dinnis Pages 17 - 20

Richard finished all these pages sometime between 6.00 in the morning an his finishing time of 9.10am. This happened to co-incide with the period of 'no time recording' where all times where simultaneously one and none at all. Basically, I don't know when they were finished. Sorry.
