The Falmouth 24hr Comic

10.30 am Tuesday 24th of November - 10.30am Wednesday 25th of November

The Poly, Falmouth

On the 24th of November a group of artists, illustrators and photographers will be challenging their creativity and stamina. With no preparation and very little sleep, they will have just 24 hours to complete 24 pages of illustrated narrative inspired by a local story

The event is open to the public to see the artists working and view the pages as they are completed. There is even opportunity to challenge yourself to create a timed comic.

The Falmouth 24hr Comic is funded by FEAST, a new programme to make great art happen in Cornish villages and towns. Their main focus is to bring communites together to take part in creative activities.

The results will be displayed at The Poly until Saturday the 28th on November.

There will be a follow up exhibition at The Soup Galley, Truro in December.

The Aftermath

I thought I'd just post some of my thoughts after the fact.

All the work has been stripped from inside The Poly. All that remains is a smell of budget energy drinks and painful ink. I apologise sincerely to the artists who had to endure my slow descent into madness, but I see this as a light-hearted lifeline of relief. Much like Richard O'Brien in The Crystal Maze. It was humbling to see the artists still staring at paper after all those hours and they did us proud. Professional, committed and dedicated to the singular event. As if scribbling to save us all.

I would like to thank them all. Also The Poly, Feast, Martin Coote, Source FM, Cally Gibson, Sara Bowler and, of course, Philippa Rushworth.

All thats left to do is close the books and sort the legacy of this fine event. Keep checking this blog for more updates, as we have some ideas to repeat, but more presently, to collate the work in a publication. So three cheers for this particular brassy strut!

Regards,
Thomas Sharpe

Comic created in a day
Thursday, November 19, 2009, 14:56

A GROUP of illustrators have challenged themselves
to create a comic in just 24 hours at an event in Falmouth next week.
The Falmouth 24hr Comic takes place at The Poly on Tuesday
and will see each illustrator make a 24-page comic.
Throughout the day visitors will be able to see the artists
working, view the results and have a go at creating their own timed comic.

The 24hr Comic idea was the brainchild of American cartoonist,
Scott McCloud in 1990 and the challenge has since been taken up
by thousands of professional and amateur artists worldwide.
Organised by three recent University College Falmouth
graduates, Tom Sharpe, Phil Rushworth and Cally Gibson, the
event will be the first major incarnation of this project in Cornwall.

The artists are not allowed to prepare any work before
the event ensuring the comic is inspired entirely by the
story they will be given on the day about Falmouth.

Visitors will be able to challenge themselves to produce their
own timed comic from 10am until 10.30pm on Tuesday - space
and material provided. All of the results will be displayed at
The Poly and could even make it onto The Falmouth 24hr Comic blog.

The Falmouth 24hr Comic challenge begins at 10.30am in
the Daniell Room at The Poly, Falmouth, and open to the public
until 10.30pm on Tuesday.

The exhibition of final work is open until Saturday from
10am to 5pm, with a follow up exhibition at The Soup Gallery, Truro, in December.

Richard Dinnis Pages 21 - 24, Comic finished at 9.10am

The thrilling conclusion to 'The Best Day of your Horsey Life' by Mr Richard Dinnis:

Hurrah!

Richard Dinnis Pages 17 - 20

Richard finished all these pages sometime between 6.00 in the morning an his finishing time of 9.10am. This happened to co-incide with the period of 'no time recording' where all times where simultaneously one and none at all. Basically, I don't know when they were finished. Sorry.

looking fresh faced and smelling like roses at 10.30am on Wednesday
from l-r: Jenny Naylor, Marcel O'Leary, Amy Brazier, Faye Simms, Robert Fresson, Tom Sharpe, Jack Teagle, Phil Rushworth (myself), Josh Bone, Laura Elliot and Jake Rowlinson.

I can't believe how many posts we made during our mammoth 24hr + bloggathon. I know we've slowed the pace a little now but there are still more comic pages to come so don't despair.

I just wanted to share with you some images of our cast of characters at 10.30 in the morning, after working for 24 hours. Apologies to Laura Elliott, her picture has got lost in the computersphere somewhere. We'll find it though..

The first to finish: the comic making machine that is Jake Rowlinson

Hot on his heels, Mr. Jack Teagle.

The very dapper Robert Fresson

Jenny Naylor and her very awesome stamp (stamp not shown)

Introducing the talented Amy Brazier

The very funny Mr. Richard Dinnis

Ms. Faye Simms, with her sterling effort

The terrific Marcel O'Leary

And finally, the incredibly perservering Josh Bone and his table of paper. This was taken at 10.28am. It was very very close!

Bonus Jack Teagle Comic

Jack literally couldn't get enough of drawing comics, he produced this gem for our community table during his four free hours...

Jake Rowlinson - Bonus Title Page

Jake had time to have a nap and knock up this bonus title page. That's the way you rock a 24hr comic challenge.

Jake Rowlinson pages 22-24, comic finished at 5.45am

Jake won the coveted honour of being the first to complete his comic, finishing at more or less 5.45am. He didn't win anything, just a chance to have a nap. We were all very impressed anyway.

Page 24, comic completed at 5.45am

Jenny Naylor pages 23 - 24 - comic finished at 8.06am

Jenny Finished her last page at 8.06am. She was really churning them out towards the end.
Well done Jenny!*

Page 23, finished at 07.50

Page 24, last page, finished at 8.06am

*can you tell I've been working for 36 hours with only 4 hours sleep? I can. Words are starting to fail me, not out of lack of enthusiasm though, just lack of conscious brain cells.

Jenny Naylor pages 19 - 22, 6.25am - 7.34am

I can't tell you how much I appreciate Jenny's oh so helpful time stickers. And very precise too. It makes my life so much easier.

Faye Simms Page 10 (final page)

Page 10

Faye spent a good few hours yesturday really thoroughly planning her story; after putting all that effort in she made the decision that sh'd rather finish it to a standard she's happy with then rush it and regret it. So, this is the final page Faye made in the 24 hour period, but it's hopefully not the last we'll see of this story... We'll keep you posted.

Marcel O'Leary pages 13 - 16 (plus teaser page)

Page 13

Page 14

Page 15

Page 16

Teaser page (unofficial page 17)

Marcel didn't get to finish his comic. He did leave us with a page which gave us a clue as to what we can look forward to in the remaining 8 pages....

Amy Brazier pages 11 - 13, finished between 4am and 5am ish

You'll notice by this point that the times start getting a little hazy. By Midnight out page times had started entering the world of guesswork. By 5 or 6 in the morning everyone was finishing pages so fast that even guesswork went out the window. It was enough to keep everything in the right order.
From now on you will probably see quite a few pages finished at 'who knows' o'clock or 'could be anytime' am.

Page 11, finished at 4am

Page 12, finished at 4.30am

page 13, finished at 5am

Page 14, finished 'some time after 5'am

Josh Bone pages 13 - 16, finished at 10.30am

And that marks the end of the 24 hour challenge for Josh, 16 pages in 24 hours* which means you can only look forward to seeing the rest of the pages in the future... watch this space...
